This is very apt and instructive. But the bulk of the blame can't fall solely at the feet of the engineers. Business and Capitalist are to be blamed as well. The business makes shipping features or code fast the measure of productivity. The engineers are forced to comply. Organisation makes number of story points you are able to amass a measure of your contributions. To use your argument - the real world, like the factory workers, don't allow for real engineering work.
